Series “Airport” Lesson 2 of 7 Level A2
At the terminal
Find your terminal, check in and hand over your bags: English words for the airport check-in desk, luggage and boarding passes, with audio.
You arrive at the airport. It is big, busy and full of signs. This lesson takes you from the entrance to the check-in desk and teaches the words for your bags. Listen to each word and repeat it.
Finding the terminal
A big airport often has more than one terminal, so check which one your flight leaves from. Follow the signs to departures: this is the part of the terminal for people who are leaving.
Definition
(noun) a place where planes take off and land, and where passengers get on and off airplanes.
Definition
(noun) a place at an airport, bus station, or train station where you arrive or leave, or where people can buy tickets or get information
Definition
(noun) Departures are the times when people leave a place, especially for a journey. Think about when someone goes to the airport to fly to another city or country.
The check-in desk
At check-in you show your ticket and passport and get your seat. Look for the check-in desk of your airline and join the queue. The person at the desk gives you a boarding pass: it shows your gate, your seat number and the boarding time. Many people check in online and only come to the desk to leave their bags.
Definition
(noun) the process of reporting your arrival at a place. When you check in at an airport, you let the staff know you're there for your flight.
Definition
(noun) a specific place in an airport or hotel where you go to show your tickets and get your room keys. It's the first stop when you're arriving or checking in for a flight or a stay.
Definition
(noun) a line of people or things waiting for something, like when you wait your turn at a store or to get on a bus. You stand in the queue until it's your turn.
Definition
(noun) a document that you need when you board an airplane. It shows that you have a seat on the flight and includes important information like the flight number and your seat number.
Your bags
Your bags are your luggage, or baggage. A big suitcase goes into the plane; a small bag stays with you as your carry-on. A trolley helps you move heavy bags. At the desk, each suitcase gets a luggage tag with your name and flight. If your suitcase is too heavy, it is overweight, and you pay for excess baggage.
Definition
(noun) luggage is the bags and suitcases you take with you when you travel. It holds your clothes, shoes, and other items you need for your trip.
Definition
(noun) Baggage refers to the suitcases and bags that you take with you when you travel. It is what you pack your clothes and other things in when you go on a trip.
Definition
(noun) a suitcase is a big bag that you use to pack your clothes and other things when you travel. You can carry it or pull it with wheels to take your stuff to a new place.
Definition
(noun) a small bag or suitcase that you take on an airplane with you, instead of checking it in. It's what you keep with you during your flight, usually containing important items like clothes or snacks.
Definition
(noun) a small cart with wheels that people use to carry groceries or luggage. It's often found in supermarkets or at airports. You push it to move things around.
Definition
(noun) a small piece of paper or plastic that is attached to your suitcase or bag. It has your name and contact details on it. This helps you get your bag back if it gets lost. When you travel, you usually put a luggage tag on your bag.
Definition
(adjective) heavier than the airline allows. If your suitcase is overweight, you pay extra money or take some things out and put them in your carry-on.
Definition
(noun) extra luggage or bags that you bring on a trip, which usually means paying more money. Imagine if you wanted to carry a lot of bags when you fly; if you have more than allowed, it's called excess baggage.
